Pope Leo offers prayers for 'Uwan’s' victims
MANILA, Philippines — Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, November 9 (Rome time, Sunday in Manila), has offered prayers to the victims of Typhoon “Uwan” (international name: Fung Wong).
During the Angelus prayer at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City on Sunday, Leo said that he offered prayers for the people who have been battered by the “violent typhoon.”
“Dear brothers and sisters, I am close to the people of the Philippines hit by a violent typhoon,” the pontiff said in Italian.
“I pray for the deceased and their families, for the injured and the displaced,” he added.
The Angelus prayer followed the Mass celebrating the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome.
As of 8 a.m., Uwan estimated to be 135 kilometers west-northwest of Bacnotan, La Union, according to the latest bulletin.
Uwan intensified into a super typhoon on November 9, just hours before making landfall in Dinalungan, Aurora.
It is the second cyclone to hit the Philippines in a week. On November 4, Typhoon Tino (International name: Kalmaegi) struck the country, leaving 224 people dead and 109 others missing.
