PNP files sedition raps vs 97 individuals over Mendiola-Recto riots

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) filed another set of complaints against 97 individuals allegedly involved in the Mendiola-Recto riots that occurred on September 21.
CIDG Director Major General Robert Alexander Morico said that among the 97 individuals are the alleged instigators and those who allegedly funded the riots.
“The investigation is continuing and in the next few days we will be filing again cases against the instigators and supposed people who are behind the violent incident in Recto and in Mendiola,” Morico said.
The complaints were filed before the Department of Justice (DOJ) last week, according to Morico.
Morico said the following criminal complaints under the Revised Penal Code (RPC) have been forwarded to the DOJ:
- Violation of Article 142 of the RPC or inciting to sedition
- Violation of Article 136 of the RPC or the conspiracy and proposal to commit sedition
- Violation of Article 139 of the RPC or sedition
On Thursday, Morico said the CIDG filed complaints against 40 individuals involved in the riot.
According to media reports, this is separate from the 97 complaints filed with the DOJ last week.
The riots occurred amid anti-corruption protests at EDSA Shrine and Luneta Park on September 21.
The unrest left two people dead and 216 arrested, some of whom were minors.
