PAGASA: ‘Tino’ strengthens into severe tropical storm

MANILA, Philippines —Tropical cyclone Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) has intensified into a severe tropical storm while moving across the Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau PAGASA reported.
As of 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, the center of Tino was located about 805 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas. The storm is moving westward at 30 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gusts of up to 115 kph.
Strong to storm-force winds extend up to 240 kilometers from the storm’s center.
Signal No. 1. More areas in Visayas and Mindanao have been placed under Signal No. 1. PAGASA said strong winds of 39 to 61 kph are expected within 36 hours, with minimal to minor impacts possible in the following provinces:
Visayas
- Eastern Samar
- Northern Samar
- Samar
- Biliran
- Leyte
- Southern Leyte
- Camotes Islands
Mindanao
- Dinagat Islands
- Surigao del Norte
PAGASA also warned the public of a high risk of life-threatening conditions and storm surges within the next 48 hours.
This warning covers low-lying coastal communities in several provinces, including Sorsogon, Masbate, all of Samar, Leyte, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, and parts of the Caraga region.
Track. Tino is expected to continue intensifying and may reach typhoon category within the next 24 hours.
PAGASA predicts the storm will make its initial landfall over Eastern Samar or the Dinagat Islands on Monday, November 3, late evening, or Tuesday, November 4, early morning.
Mariners are advised that sea travel is now considered risky for all types of vessels along the eastern seaboard of Eastern Samar, where wave heights could reach up to seven meters.
Furthermore, the surge of the Northeast Monsoon will bring strong to gale-force gusts across large areas of Luzon, including Batanes, Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, Metro Manila and the entire Bicol Region, from November 3 through Tuesday, November 4.
