DOJ: Search for ‘missing sabungeros’ halted due to weather, Taal eruption

MANILA, Philippines — The search for the missing sabungeros has been temporarily suspended due to weather conditions and the Taal Volcano eruption.
Department of Justice spokesperson Polo Martinez said on Monday, October 27, that the Philippine Coast Guard halted operations in Taal Lake “due to the deterioration of prevailing weather conditions in the area.”
Martinez also noted that the lake had poor underwater visibility.
“However, all operating units remain on standby and area prepared to resume operations once weather conditions improve,” Martinez said in a statement.
On Sunday, October 26, state seismologists Phivolcs recorded three minor eruptions from Taal Volcano.
According to a previous interview with Martinez, a total of 981 bones were recovered from Taal Lake and submitted for examination.
This included 887 human skeletal fragments collected during searches conducted between July 10 and October 12.
Among the recovered fragments were three sets of human remains, consisting of 264 bones.
The search for the missing cockfight enthusiasts began on July 10, following allegations by Julie Patidongan that the missing individuals were thrown into Taal Lake after being killed.
On October 21, Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Charlie Guhit said that the murder complaints filed by the families of the missing individuals against tycoon Atong Ang and several others have been submitted for resolution.
