Ex-DPWH exec Bernardo becomes a 'protected witness' — Remulla

MANILA, Philippines — Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) undersecretary Roberto Bernardo is now also a “protected witness,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said.
Remulla said this on Thursday, September 25, when asked if the former DPWH official had been admitted to the witness protection program.
“For evalutation, pero considered a protected witness. We will give him security already,” Remulla said in an ambush interview with reporters on Thursday.
This came a day after Remulla said that the implicated former DPWH engineers—Henry Alcantara, Brice Hernandez, Jaypee Mendoza—and the Discaya couple are considered protected witnesses.
Remulla and Bernardo proceeded to the Department of Justice in Ermita, Manila, to evaluate the latter’s testimony on the Senate probe.
This came immediately after attending the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing concerning anomalous flood control projects.
During the hearing, Bernardo implicated several lawmakers who allegedly received kickbacks on the flood control project.
Names he mentioned include Senator Francis Escudero, former Senators Bong Revilla and Nancy Binay and Rep. Zaldy Co (Ako Bicol Partylist), who is reportedly out of the country.
