Philippines ratifies UN marine biodiversity treaty

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines formally deposited the instrument of ratification to a landmark United Nations treaty to safeguard marine biodiversity on the high seas, during the UN General Assembly in New York City.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro submitted Tuesday the Philippines’ instrument of ratification to the agreement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement), also known as the High Seas Treaty.
The BBNJ Agreement, the third implementing agreement of the 1982 UNCLOS, seeks to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.
The European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines yesterday expressed support for the ratification of the High Seas Treaty.
In another development, the Philippines was elected to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency for the term 2025 to 2027.
The Philippine embassy in Vienna said the Philippines’ candidature enjoyed overwhelming support especially from developing countries and countries newly embarking in nuclear energy.
This marks the Philippines’ return to the Board following its most recent term from 2015 to 2017.
The Department of Energy welcomed the Philippines’ election to the board as the country prepares its first operational nuclear plant. – Brix Lelis
