Philippines climbs to 50th in Global Innovation Index

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has moved up three ranks, to the 50th spot out of 139 economies, in this year’s edition of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s Global Innovation Index.

The GII ranks the innovation performance of economies and highlights their innovation strengths and weaknesses.

The Philippines’ 2025 GII ranking is better compared to the government’s goal of placing 52nd this year under the updated Philippine Development Plan.

Aside from rising from the 53rd spot last year, the WIPO said the Philippines was among countries in Southeast Asia, East Asia and Oceania that made the greatest advances.

The GII report showed that the Philippines’ ranking improved in four out of seven pillars tracked by the WIPO.

The Philippines went up to 61st place in the institutions pillar, from the 65th spot last year.

In infrastructure, the Philippines’ ranking rose to 65th spot, from 85th last year.

As for market sophistication, the Philippines climbed to 53rd from 77th place.

The Philippines’ performance in knowledge and technology output also improved, to 38th place from 42nd.

In human capital and research, the country’s performance dropped to 90th from 84th.

The Philippines’ ranking also declined to the 40th spot in the business sophistication pillar, from 37th last year.

In creative output, the Philippines slid to 61st place from 60th.
