Marcos calls off US trip for UN General Assembly

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has canceled his trip to New York this week for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), with Malacañang saying he decided “to focus on local issues.”
Marcos and his delegation were originally scheduled to leave on Friday for the 80th session of the UNGA. The high-level international gathering runs from Sept. 23 to 27 and 29.
“The President has delegated his engagements at the UNGA to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to allow him to focus on local issues,” Presidential Communications Secretary Dave Gomez said in a statement, referring to Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro.
The announcement came amid a planned rally by several groups on Sept. 21 to denounce massive corruption in the government’s flood control projects.
At a press briefing, the President encouraged the public to express outrage but to do it peacefully.
