New chief Nartatez assumes PNP leadership
MANILA, Philippines — Lt. Gen. Jose Nartatez Jr. immediately assumed office on Tuesday, August 26, as chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) following the removal of Police Gen. Nicolas Torre III.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced the change in a press briefing the same day but offered little detail.
“The President decided to relieve Police General Torre. This was not an easy choice, but it was made in the national interest,” he said.
Torre’s three-month stint as PNP chief ended after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued an order dated Aug. 25 relieving him of duty.
Remulla described the decision as a shift in direction but did not elaborate. “It was made in the national interest,” he repeated.
Shake-up at the PNP. The order came after the National Police Commission overturned several personnel assignments made by Torre, including the posting of Nartatez and other senior officials.
In an order dated August 25, Marcos effectively ordered his relief.
