American child sex offender, 67, arrested in Manila

MANILA, Philippines — A 67-year-old American convicted of child sex offenses in the United States has been arrested in Manila, immigration officials said Thursday.
James Russel Munson was taken into custody Wednesday by the Bureau of Immigration’s fugitive search unit along Roxas Boulevard in Ermita, according to BI FSU chief Rendel Ryan Sy in a statement on Thursday, August 21. Details of the arrest were not disclosed.
Citing the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime and U.S. authorities, Sy said Munson has a conviction for child sexual offenses, making him ineligible to enter or stay in the Philippines.
“Philippine immigration laws prohibit the entry of foreign nationals previously convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude, which includes registered sex offenders,” Sy said.
Part of anti-predator drive. Munson’s arrest is part of Project #ShieldKids, the bureau's intensified campaign targeting sexual predators and foreign nationals considered a risk to public security, especially to children.
He is now in BI custody and will face deportation and blacklisting.
