Baste assumes post as acting Davao City mayor

MANILA, Philippines — Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte has become the acting mayor of Davao City after his father failed to take his oath of office yesterday.
Former president Rodrigo Duterte won the midterm elections while detained in The Hague for alleged crimes against humanity over his bloody drug war that claimed over 6,000 lives.
After yesterday’s oath-taking, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said the issue of Rodrigo’s mayoral term is now under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia earlier noted that Duterte could take his oath abroad before an embassy official.
“Where the oath-taking takes place is not indicated in the law. There’s also no guideline on whether oath-taking should be done in the consulate, embassy premises or any other place,” he said.
