MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and the Republic of Türkiye are looking at possible joint naval training and education events that will boost defense cooperation between the two countries.

Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Jose Ma Ambrosio Ezpeleta recently met with Ambassador Niyazi Evren Akyol to discuss such plans.

During their discussion, they reaffirmed the mutual interest of both nations in deepening defense cooperation and pursuing opportunities in maritime security, interoperability and capacity development.

Akyol congratulated Ezpeleta on his appointment as the Philippine Navy’s commander and discussed the upcoming 17th International Defense Industry Fair 2025, set to take place this July at the Istanbul Trade Center.

He also expressed Türkiye’s readiness to support future training and education programs for submarine and surface ship operations in partnership with the Philippine Navy.

“Türkiye is an old friend, heavily invested in the stability of the Philippines and a strong supporter of its sovereignty. We are ready to do our best to further strengthen the Philippines’ defense of its rights and sovereignty,” Akyol said.

Ezpeleta, for his part, expressed his gratitude for the longstanding 76-year diplomatic ties between the Philippines and the Republic of Türkiye.

“We are happy to share this long-standing relationship with Türkiye. Thank you for the continued support, especially in enhancing our capabilities. Rest assured of our commitment to sustained coordination and collaboration with your government,” he said.
