MANILA, Philippines — Recognizing their outstanding contributions to nation-building, President Marcos yesterday conferred the Presidential Medal of Merit posthumously on National Artist Nora Aunor, “Asia’s Queen of Songs” Pilita Corrales, veteran actress Gloria Romero and decorated chef Margarita Fores.

The Presidential Merit Award is one of the highest honors a Filipino can receive.

Fores’ first cousin, former interior and local government secretary Mar Roxas and several members of the entertainment industry were also seen at the gathering.

In a statement earlier in the day, the Office of the Social Secretary said the government honors the four extraordinary Filipino women “whose artistry, talent and passion have profoundly shaped Philippine culture and heritage.”

Known as the “Superstar” and fondly called Ate Guy by fans and peers, Aunor passed away on April 16 at the age of 71.

The country honored the late veteran actress with a state funeral on April 22, which was also declared by the President as a “Day of National Mourning.”

Romero passed away on Jan. 25 at the age of 91.

On April 12, Corrales died at 87 years old after a six-decade career across music and television.

Fores, founder of Cibo, died on Feb. 11 at 65 years old. She was named Asia’s Best Female Chef in 2016.

Families of the awardees were present at the ceremony held at the Ceremonial Hall of Malacañang.
