MANILA, Philippines — At least nine areas in the country experienced “danger” level heat index between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius over the weekend, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

At a briefing, state weather specialist Obet Badrina said that the highest heat index was recorded in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, with 44 degrees Celsius, followed by Virac, Catanduanes, with 43 degrees Celsius.

Badrina added that 42 degrees Celsius was experienced in Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Camiling, Tarlac; Cuyo, Palawan; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Dumangas, Iloilo; La Carlota, Negros Oriental; and Baybay, Leyte.

“Here in Luzon, we expect hot temperatures especially at noon,” he said.

PAGASA categorized “danger” heat index between 42 and 51 degrees Celsius and warned that continued exposure to the sun and extreme heat can cause heat cramps, while exhaustion and stroke are most likely.

In Metro Manila, the heat index ranged between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will continue to affect Palawan and Mindanao.

“There is a big chance of rains in the southern and western parts of Mindanao, including Palawan due to the ITCZ,” Badrina said.

He added that the easterlies or warm wind from the Pacific Ocean will affect the rest of the country.

“Here in Luzon, there are monitored clouds, that’s why there is a small chance of rain,” he said.

He said that no low-pressure area was monitored and no typhoon is expected in the next few days.
