Marcos: Rizal's vision of just society still alive today 

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. joined the nation in commemorating Rizal Day on Monday, December 30, saying that José Rizal's legacy has continued to inspire generations of Filipinos since his death in 1896.

Marcos led the ceremony commemorating the 128th anniversary of Rizal's martyrdom at the Rizal National Monument in the City of Manila on Monday. He was joined by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and their children. 

"Dr. José Rizal's vision of a just and forward-thinking society is no less alive today than it was more than a century ago," Marcos said in his statement released by the Presidential Communications Office.

Marcos urged Filipinos to embody the national hero's core values of love of country, dedication to truth, and commitment to people's welfare. 

He emphasized that "true change can begin with us," especially when confronting present-day challenges.

"Let us be bold enough to be catalysts of change and hold on to the belief that each of us can contribute to the beloved Philippines that stands on the pillars of solidarity and progress," Marcos said.

"Whether in service to our communities, in the pursuit of knowledge, or in uplifting the marginalized, let us make decisions that will echo [Rizal's] resolve," he added.

In a separate statement, Vice President Sara Duterte also commemorated the life of Rizal by highlighting his unwavering courage against oppression and injustice.

Duterte emphasized how Rizal's experiences serve as a powerful reminder that "even in the darkest times, the light of truth and justice can prevail."

"Let us honor his memory by standing for what is right and working together toward a more just, equitable, and truly free Philippines," Duterte said in Filipino. 

The Light Rail Transit Authority earlier announced that it would offer free rides on Rizal Day at all LRT-2 stations from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
