MANILA, Philippines — At least two low-pressure areas (LPAs) are being monitored inside and outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 3 p.m. bulletin yesterday.
PAGASA located the LPA at 100 kilometers west-northwest of Coron, Palawan.
“It is embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) affecting Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao,” the agency said, adding that this LPA is unlikely to develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
The LPA outside PAR, it said, has a high potential of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
“Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region and Visayas will experience rains brought by LPA and ITCZ,” PAGASA said.
It added that the ITCZ – the convergence of winds from the southern and northern hemisphere causing thunderstorms – would also bring rains in Mindanao.
Weather specialist Veronica Torres said thunderstorm advisories were issued in Rizal, Laguna and portions of Batangas and Quezon provinces.
She added that the southwest monsoon continues to weaken as the country transitions to northeast monsoon.
PAGASA also said the easterlies would bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms to Ilocos region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon.
