MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has declared June 17 a regular holiday nationwide in observance of Eid’l Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, one of the two major feasts of Islam.

The declaration is contained in Proclamation No. 579 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin by the authority of the President last June 4.

The proclamation said the holiday declaration was made upon the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos based on the 1445 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar.

Under Republic Act 9849 enacted in 2009, the tenth day of Zhul Hijja, the twelfth month of the Islamic Calendar, is declared as a national holiday for the observance of Eid’l Adha.

Eid’l Adha, whose date is movable, is the tenth day in the month of Hajj or Islamic Pilgrimage to Mecca wherein Muslims pay homage to Abraham’s supreme act of sacrifice and signifies mankind’s obedience to God, the law said.
