Japan’s new envoy arrives in Manila

MANILA, Philippines —  Japanese Ambassador-designate Kazuya Endo arrived yesterday in Manila.

“The robust ties binding our nations have set the stage for ‘the golden age’ of the Strategic Partnership. Our relations are expanding in various areas, from the economy and security to cultural and people-to-people exchanges,” Kazuya said in a statement.

“As I embark on this diplomatic journey in the Philippines, I look forward to collaborating with the Filipino community to further elevate these wonderful relations. Together, let us aspire to a future defined by strengthened ties, shared prosperity, and enduring friendship,” he added.

In November last year, Kazuya joined Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to Manila.

The new ambassador, who appreciates being called “Kuya Kazuya,” posted a fun discovery at a supermarket in Japan – a treasure trove of sweet Philippine bananas, like an advance party before his posting.

“It’s like they sent an advance party to treat me to these tasty goodies,” Kazuya posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Ready to peel away the barriers and dive into fruitful collaboration,” he added.

Kazuya met his predecessor, former ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa, as he prepared to fly to Manila.

Kazuhiko himself became a great fan of Filipino soup dishes during his time in Manila.

“Listening to his presentation about his experiences in the Philippines, I am eager to meet our Filipino friends and begin my journey in this exciting country,” Kazuya said.

Japan attaches great importance to cooperation with the Philippines as a neighboring maritime nation and a strategic partner to maintain and strengthen the free and open international order amid the multiple crises the international community is facing.
