MANILA, Philippines — The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) yesterday confirmed that several rats were captured by pest control service personnel at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 departure area using mouse traps and adhesive boards.

The MIAA said pest control personnel cannot use poison to kill rats because passengers might complain of the stench when the rodents decompose in accessible areas, so they use only mouse traps and adhesive boards and other gadgets.

The mouse hunting began last March 2 after rats became an issue on social media. MIAA general manager Eric Ines urged pest control providers to work double time, threatening to cancel their contracts if the situation does not improve.

MIAA head executive and spokesman Chris Bendijo said the pest control personnel placed mouse traps and industrial strength adhesives in different places where mice were seen roaming.

While admitting having difficulty containing the rodents, the MIAA said it is doing its best to eliminate them.
