PNP says airsoft, gun props need permit

MANILA, Philippines — Individuals who will use airsoft guns and gun props are required to secure permits, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

In an advisory released on Friday, the PNP Firearms and Explosives Office reminded the public that imitation firearms used in theatrical plays or entertainment purposes shall require a Certificate of Authority-Transport.

“In view of the foregoing, those individuals who intend to use airsoft/airgun, and other imitation firearms as theatrical property during a performance or production must seek authority from the CBFSC by filing an application for a Certificate of Authority-Transport,” the advisory read. 

Airsoft guns are replica toy guns used for “airsoft sports” and are often used as props in film productions. They are chambered by non-metallic spherical projectiles often made out of plastic. 

The airgun, on the other hand, uses compressed air instead of gunpowder.

Firearms replicas are also covered by the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections gun ban.

Brig. Gen. Roger Quesada said those who will fail to comply may face charges and have their props seized as it does not have the proper permits from the PNP and the Commission on Elections.

Comelec Committee on the Ban on Firearms or gun and Safety Concerns last August 28 led the ceremonial kick-off for the election period and gun ban.

The election gun ban took effect at 12:01 a.m. of August 28 and will be in place until November 29.

"The Election Period and the Period of Prohibited Acts, foremost of which is the Ban on the Bearing, Carrying or Transporting Firearms and Other Deadly Weapons (Gun Ban), shall commence on 28 August 2023 and shall remain until 29 November 2023, pursuant to COMELEC Resolution No. 10905 in relation to COMELEC Resolution No. 10924," the poll body said.

Individuals must go through the application process and acquire a certificate of authority from the Comelec to be allowed to carry firearms during election season.
