Marcos appoints new ambassadors

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has appointed career diplomat Carlos Sorreta as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Prior to his latest appointment, Sorreta was the acting undersecretary for multilateral affairs and international economic relations at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

He also served as ambassador to Russia, deputy permanent representative at the Philippine Permanent Mission to the UN in New York and deputy chief of mission at the Philippine embassy in Washington.

Meanwhile, the President designated Jose Ignacio as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of India.

As ambassador to India, Ignacio also has jurisdiction over the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

Maria Angela Ponce was named Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Malaysia.

Marcos appointed Renato Pedro Villa as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with concurrent jurisdiction over the Republic of Yemen.

Paul Raymund Cortes, meanwhile, was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Portuguese Republic.

Cortes also has concurrent jurisdiction over the Republic of Cabo Verde, the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe and the Republic of Angola.

The appointment papers of the country’s new envoys were all signed on May 11, according to the Presidential Communications Office.
