MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has given visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim a copy of national hero Jose Rizal’s novel “Noli me Tangere,” a gesture that he said showcased the depth of friendship between the Philippines and Malaysia.

The two leaders exchanged gifts after their bilateral meeting in Malacañang last Wednesday. In a Facebook post, Radio Television Malacañang (RTVM) said Marcos handed over Noli me Tangere, Tercera Edition 1909, to Anwar.

According to RTVM, Anwar considers Rizal as a “precursor to Asian renaissance” and deeply appreciates Marcos’ gesture in giving “a very invaluable gift.”

Anwar’s wife, Dr. Wan Azizah binti Wan Ismail, was given a waling-waling brass card holder, described by RTVM as “a decorative ornament that combines the beauty of the waling-waling with the durability and attractiveness of brass crafted by Cebuano artisans.”

The RTVM post did not say what Anwar gave Marcos as a gesture of friendship.

“Yesterday’s (March 1) meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was a noteworthy occasion for sharing ideas and perspectives on areas of mutual interest. It was further solidified by our exchange of gifts that showcased the depth of our friendship,” Marcos tweeted yesterday.

“It is our hope to build upon the progress made and continue working together toward a prosperous and peaceful future,” he added.

In his toast remarks during the official dinner hosted for Anwar, Marcos said the Malaysian leader’s two-day official visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of Manila and Kuala Lumpur to revitalize their bilateral relations.

“I am heartened by the visit of our friend Prime Minister Anwar. This is not only because I am happy to see a friend, whom we have come to admire greatly,” Marcos said.–  Janvic Mateo
