Pacquiao vows to run after Marcos ill-gotten wealth
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Manny Pacquiao vowed to run after the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcoses if he wins the presidency in the May 9 elections.
With stamping out corruption in government as the centerpiece of his campaign, Pacquiao said it is proper to pursue the funds, which were stolen by the Marcos family.
The presidential aspirant promised to strengthen the Presidential Commission on Good Government, the body created during Corazon Aquino’s presidency to recover the Marcoses’ ill-gotten wealth.
“We will strengthen the PCGG. What is for the government is for the government,” Pacquiao said in Filipino at the KBP Presidential Forum yesterday.
Retired Supreme Court associate justice Antonio Carpio earlier said government efforts to recover the ill-gotten wealth would likely stop if Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is elected president.
The PCGG has recovered at least P171 billion worth of tainted wealth from the Marcos family and is in the process of running after P125 billion more in stolen assets.
