MANILA, Philippines — A veteran poll official is set to assume as commissioner of the Commission on Elections.

Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abas announced yesterday the nomination of Davao del Norte election supervisor Aimee Ferolino-Ampoloqiuo as successor of retired commissioner Al Parreño.

The nomination of Ampoloqiuo completed the composition of the seven-member Comelec.

Ampoloqiuo is the sixth commissioner that President Duterte appointed during his term.

With the commissioners now complete, Abas said the Comelec is better equipped in fulfilling its mandate to advance democracy and can continue to prepare for the 2022 national and local elections amid the pandemic.

Abas said Ampoloqiuo has been a vital member of the Comelec for nearly three decades.

“Commissioner Aimee is an inspiration to all public servants. Her ascent to the Comelec leadership is a testament of her great work and her dedication to deliver quality and unparalled service,” Abas said.

Ampoloquio joined the Comelec as an emergency laborer in 1994. She became election assistant for 12 years. She was appointed election officer for 10 years before becoming provincial election supervisor.

Abas said Ampoloqiuo’s experience in the election frontline service would greatly contribute to Comelec’s thrust to ensure that the electoral processes are responsive to the needs of the electorate. - Edith Regalado
