MANILA, Philippines (Update 1, 5:38 p.m.) — The number of patients who have recovered from the coronavirus disease in the Philippines approached the 1,000-level, the Department of Health said Tuesday.

Forty-three more COVID-19 survivors were reported—lower than the 70 recoveries recorded in the past two days. This pushed the total number of patients who have survived the highly-infectious illness to 975.

The Philippines recorded 19 new fatalities related to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. The country now has an overall death toll of 530.

With the addition of 181 more cases, a total of 7,958 virus infections have been detected in the country since late January.

Around 68% of the nation’s declared cases were concentrated in Metro Manila, while the remaining provinces of Luzon accounted for 21% of the total confirmed infections.

Meanwhile, 616 cases were reported in Visayas, while 183 were recorded in Mindanao. Some 51 cases are still being validated.

The enhanced community quarantine will remain in the capital region, Central Luzon except Aurora, Calabarzon, Pangasinan, Benguet, Iloilo, Cebu and Davao City until May 15.

Currently, there are 19 laboratories across the archipelago capable of conducting 6,320 tests each day, the DOH said.

In the region, the Philippines ranked third in the list of Southeast Asian nations with highest number of virus infections, behind Singapore with 14,951 cases and Indonesia with 9,096 cases.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases soared past three million worldwide, with 211,326 deaths.
