Philippines, Malaysia kick off joint naval exercise
MANILA, Philippines — In a bid to strengthen mutual cooperation, the Philippine Navy and the Royal Malaysian Navy launched a combined bilateral training on Monday.
The five-day maritime training activity (MTA) between the two navies will be conducted within the area of responsibility of the Philippine Navy's Naval Forces Central, which is based in Cebu.
This year, the Philippines will be hosting the joint exercises, which includes ceremonial and sports activities, subject matter expert exchanges and table top exercise. Hosting of the maritime training activity alternates between the Philippines and Malaysia every two years.
"The MTA is conducted by the two navies through the conduct of theoretical maritime training activity during the preceding year and actual applications during the continuing year," the navy said in a statement.
The activities seek to address maritime security threats and the conduct of search and rescue to further understand common operating procedures.
For the activity, the Philippine Navy will deploy BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS36), BRP Ivatan (LC298) and BRP Salvador Abcede (PC114) while the Royal Malaysian Navy will use KD Perak and KD Pari.
"The Philippine Navy is always ready to lend our helping hands in the best ways that we can to respond to our fellow Filipinos and our foreign counterparts," the navy said. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
