US embassy celebrates Pride Month
MANILA, Philippines — The United States embassy in Manila is celebrating Pride Month with its Pride flag prominently displayed outside its building.
The embassy said it would also feature this month lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)-friendly destinations in the US and American companies in the Philippines.
June is Pride Month, a month to celebrate gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and asexual people, plus all other sexual orientations and genders, it said.
An independent UN human rights expert noted that policymakers in most parts of the world are making decisions in the dark when it comes to sexual orientation and gender identity.
Victor Madrigal-Borloz urged states to collect more data to understand the root causes of violence often routinely directed toward LGBT people in societies across the world.
“States must adequately address this scourge through public policy, access to justice, law reform or administrative actions,” Madrigal-Borloz said.
Clear information about the realities lived by LGBT people are, at best, little understood, incomplete and fragmented, he said.
