MANILA, Philippines — A new opera written by a famed Filipino composer, which weaves in themes of discrimination, racism, identity, inclusiveness and diversity in society, was staged in Germany.

The opera staging of “The True Story of King Kong” ran for six performances at the Magdeburg Schauspielhaus. Written by Jeffrey Ching, it is a retelling of the popular King Kong story.

The innovative staging incorporated video techniques, puppetry and pantomime and made for a compelling presentation.

Ching’s work was commissioned by Theater Magdeburg’s Opera House and was undertaken in cooperation with the Puppentheater Magdeburg, winner of the prestigious Bundes Theater Prize.

The international cast of classical singers and performers included Ching’s spouse, acclaimed Filipino soprano Andion Fernandez who once again excelled in one of the principal roles.

Both Ching and Fernandez continue to stage new works and perform in Germany. The Filipino composer is set to premiere a new work in the coming months as he blazes trails in the classical music scene in Europe.
