Satisfaction with Duterte admin climbs to fresh record high in Q1 — SWS
MANILA, Philippines — Public satisfaction with the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte soared to a fresh record high in the first quarter, according to a new Social Weather Stations survey released more than a week before the May 13 midterm elections.
Results of a March 28 to 31 poll of 1,440 Filipino adults showed 81% of respondents satisfied and 9% dissatisfied with the performance of the Duterte government. The remaining 10% were undecided.
That yielded a net satisfaction rating — which the pollster calculated by subtracting the proportion of respondents who are satisfied from those who are dissatisfied — of +72, which the SWS classified as “excellent.”
The latest reading was two points above the previous record of “excellent” +70 in December 2017, and six points higher than the “very good” +66 registered in the preceding quarter.
Based on SWS methodology for net satisfaction ratings, a score of 70 and above is considered excellent, 50 to 69 is very good, 30-49 good and 10-29 moderate.
Broken down, the six-point spike in the Duterte administration’s overall net satisfaction score was due to increases in all geographical areas, while it jumped to “excellent” from “very good” among respondents in both urban and rural communities.
It was “excellent” in classes ABC and D, or the “masa,” but declined to “very good” from “excellent” in class E.
‘Governance report card’
By areas of governance, SWS said the Duterte government’s net satisfaction rating rose by one grade to “excellent” on “helping the poor,” up by four points to a new peak of +72 in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, it stayed “very good” on “fighting terrorism” and “reconstructing Marawi City,” but climbed to “good” on “ensuring that no family will ever be hungry.”
Elsewhere, it stayed “good” on “fighting crimes,” “reconciling with communist rebels,” “reconciling with Muslim rebels,” “eradicating graft and corruption,” “foreign relations” and “defending Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.”
It stayed “moderate” on “fighting inflation,” up by eight points to +22 in March. — Ian Nicolas Cigaral
