MANILA, Philippines— The Department of Tourism on Wednesday said it is already prepared for the influx of tourists in regional destinations during Holy Week.
The agency said it geared up for the anticipated influx of tourists and pilgrims this Holy Week break by having regional offices coordinate with local government units and national government agencies to make sure the destinations can handle the number of tourists.
It also issued letters seeking safety and security measures from LGUs.
The DOT said it also asked airport authorities to establish help desks in airports across the regions.
The department also coordinated with LGUs and the Philippine National Police for increased visibility and to ensure peace and order in their respective jurisdictions.
The DOT and PNP have a Tourist-Oriented Police for Community Order and Protection (TOP-COP) program where police personnel are trained to handle and assist tourists.
Earlier, the Tourism department asked resorts and hotels to deploy life guards and in their beach areas or swimming pools in case of any emergency. It said that DOT-accredited establishments have first aid kits and trained staff.
Meanwhile, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat urged travelers to practice responsible tourism by respecting local traditions and practices. She also advised them to practice sustainable tourism by properly managing personal trash and avoiding single-use plastics by bringing personal water tumblers and utensils.
“Lent is an integral part of our national identity. It reflects our faith, history and traditions passed on by our forefathers. Pilgrims and tourists are encouraged to take part in this unique Philippine experience but to always be cautious about their personal safety and be respectful of others,” Puyat said.
“We want to preserve and keep our Lenten traditions thriving. This is why we would invite everyone to practice sustainable tourism. This means being sensitive to the destinations we visit, respecting people’s traditions and practices as well as avoiding destruction of the environment,” she added.
Malacañang earlier declared April 18, Maundy Thursday to April 19, Good Friday regular non-working holidays and April 20, Black Saturday as special non-working holiday. —Rosette Adel
