MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday cautioned penitents that the self-flagellation and crucifixion they conduct during Holy Week could cause tetanus or heat stroke.

In an interview, DOH Undersecretary Eric Domingo said it is best to avoid flagellation and being nailed to the cross because these could lead to tetanus.

He said even if the penitents use nails or whips that have been sterilized, there is no assurance that they would not cause infection because of exposure to various elements in the course of penitence.

Domingo added the DOH does not recommend taking prophylaxis or preventive antibitoic before the penitence as this could only expose the flagellants to anti-microbeal resistance.

“You take antibiotic after you acquire wounds or cuts to prevent tetanus. They also must make sure that their wounds are properly cleaned,” he maintained.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III advised the public to avoid heat stroke and other summer diseases in the wake of rising temperatures this Holy Week.

“Prepare for the Visita Iglesia by bringing bottled water to keep yourself hydrated, well-packed foods that do not easily spoil and umbrella as you visit churches,” he said.

According to Duque, heat could aggravate high blood pressure so those with hypertension should take their maintenance medicine, if there is any.

He urged the public to avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “when the temperature is at its peak.”

For those traveling during the Holy Week, it is best to bring first aid kits and medicine along with other necessities as a safety precaution.

Duque has underscored the importance of checking the roadworthiness of the vehicle, avoid speeding and make sure seat belts are fastened or helmets and other protective gear are properly worn.

“Holy Week is a time for solemnity. We can make our religious/spiritual and other activities safe, disease and stress-free if we observe these reminders,” he added.
