Maynilad to share supply with Manila Water to address shortage
MANILA, Philippines — Water service provider Maynilad on Tuesday said it will provide additional supply to Manila Water to ease the water shortage in Metro Manila by next month.
Ronald Padua, Maynilad Water Supply operations head, said Maynilad will be doing a cross-border flow or water sharing to give 50 million liters of water per day to Manila Water starting April. Fifty million liters of water per day can benefit up to 50,000 households for 24 hours.
“Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System requested us if we can share water through cross border flow to ease the problem being experienced right now,” Padua said in Filipino during a televised press briefing.
The water that will be shared with Manila Water will come from Maynilad’s new water treatment plant in Muntinlupa that has a capacity of 100 million liters per day. There will be additional 150 million liters per day once the second water treatment plant gets “energized.”
The water sharing will benefit Manila Water customers in the cities of Quezon, Parañaque and Taguig.
Manila Water will be charged tariff with minimal impact on rates, Padua said.
Maynilad, which provides services to the west zone of Metro Manila, also committed five water tankers to help Manila Water, which provides water to residents living in the east zone.
‘Maynilad consumers won’t be affected’
Padua, moreover, assured that the water supply of Maynilad consumers will not be affected even with the water sharing.
He noted that Maynilad is not affected by water supply shortage because of the “normal” allocation from Angat Dam.
Padua said it is be the first time that Maynilad will share its water supply with Manila Water. Previously, it was the Manila Water that shared its supply with Maynilad when the country experienced El Niño in 2010 and 2015.
Manila Water has been implementing water service interruptions as the water level at the La Mesa Dam continues to drop. — Gaea Katreena Cabico
