MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is validating reports about the alleged spying activities of Chinese telecom giant Huawei.

PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde yesterday gave the assurance following the warning of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about the security risks posed by the tech firm on countries that are using its services.

“What is important here, if there is really such information, we have to validate that,” he told reporters at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

Albayalde said it is important to verify the information about Huawei to ensure the country is safe from perceived threats from other countries.

“We have to look into that because if true, that’s very dangerous for our national security,” he said.

As there is no concrete proof that Huawei is involved in spying or any other illegal activities, Albayalde said the company can continue to operate in the country.

This includes participating in public bidding for the procurement of communications and electronics equipment of the PNP.
