MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Amang slightly accelerated as it continues to dump rains over southern Luzon and eastern Visayas, state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday afternoon.
As of 1 p.m., the center of “Amang” was spotted 80 kilometers north northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar or 120 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar.
It maintained strength with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 60 kph.
The tropical depression slightly gained speed, now moving north at 15 kph from the previous 10 kph.
Tropical cyclone warning signal no. 1 has been hoisted over:
- Sorsogon
- Masbate including Ticao Island
- Northern Samar
- Eastern Samar
- Samar
- Biliran
- Leyte
Winds from 30 to 60 kph or intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours.
The state weather bureau said that moderate to heavy rains are expected over Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar today.
For tomorrow, moderate to heavy rains may be experienced over eastern Visayas, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon and Masbate.
PAGASA also advised fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts not to venture out over the seaboards of northern Luzon and eastern seaboards of central Luzon, southern Luzon, Visayas, Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte due to “Amang” and the surge of northeast monsoon.
“Amang” is forecast to be in the vicinity of Catarman, Northern Samar by Tuesday morning.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, 11,143 persons were pre-emptively evacuated. — Gaea Katreena Cabico
