Immigration warns against dealing with 'fixers'
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration on Wednesday urged the travelers and tourists not to deal with “fixers” and travel agents not accredited by the agency.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente asked the public to report to the bureau any “illicit or suspicious activities” by foreigners who might be violating the immigration laws, rules and regulations.
“[T]ransact only with authorized employees of the agency and avoid dealing with ‘fixers’ and other unauthorized individuals and entities,” the BI said in a statement.
Any illicit activity by agents and employees of the Immigration may also be reported for an investigation and to hold them administratively liable.
Earlier, the Department of Justice sacked its employees after they confessed to engaging in illegal processing of visas at the bureau.
Morente also reminded foreign nationals in the country to avoid overstaying in the country. Tourists whose visas are about to expire may seek an extension for their stay at the BI main office in Intramuros, Manila or other Immigration offices.
He also stressed that foreigners should always comply with the conditions of their visa. “Do not engage in study, employment or business without first obtaining the necessary permit or visa,” the Immigrations chief also said.
“Aliens intending to work in the country must secure a special work permit or working visa while those who want to study here must obtain a special study permit or student visa,” Morente added. — Kristine Joy Patag
