MANILA, Philippines — Boracay island remains one of the top beaches in Asia, international travel planning and booking site TripAdvisor said, amid environmental woes plaguing the Philippines’ top tourist draw.

Boracay—which is known for its fine white sand, amazing sunsets, vibrant nightlife and abundant water sports—was ranked 2nd out of 25 beaches in Asia in TripAdvisor’s 2018 Traveler’s Choice Awards.

“Boracay is the Perfect white sand beach our family has ever visited,” a tourist was quoted as saying by TripAdvisor, a massive online repository of hotel and restaurant reviews.

President Rodrigo Duterte had threatened to shut down Boracay, which he called a “cesspool,” and ordered an urgent cleanup of the country’s top tourist destination.

The firebrand leader’s pronouncement prompted government officials to look into the island’s garbage problem. On Friday, a Senate inquiry learned that overdevelopment, corruption and failure to enforce environment laws by local officials have wiped out five of the nine wetlands in the world-famous Boracay.

Meanwhile, a 60-day total closure of business establishments on Boracay is being pushed by two aides of Duterte to rehabilitate the resort island, but the proposal was vehemently opposed by labor and business groups.
