No special treatment for cops in Espinosa murder — PNP

MANILA, Philippines - There is no special treatment for the police officers detained for the murder of former Albuera mayor Rolando Espinosa, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said yesterday.

PNP spokesman Senior Supt. Dionardo Carlos gave assurance that no special treatment would be given to Supt. Marvin Marcos, former chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region 8, and 18 other police officers indicted for Espinosa’s murder.

The Baybay City, Leyte regional trial court ordered the arrest of the police officers for multiple murder and other violations.

Espinosa, one of the politicians named by President Duterte as involved in illegal drugs, was killed inside his prison cell in Baybay City last Nov. 5.

Espinosa and another inmate, Raul Yap, were killed in a supposed shootout with the CIDG policemen who were serving a search warrant in their detention cells.

The court ordered Marcos and the other police officers involved in the killing should be detained at the CIDG Region 8 detention facility.
