MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a Filipino was killed in an ambush in Mozambique last Saturday.

"We have received a report from our embassy in Pretoria of an overseas Filipino being a fatal casualty in an ambush last Saturday in Mozambique," DFA spokesperson Charles Jose said on Thursday.

According to reports, the female Filipino teacher was on a passenger bus when Renamo insurgents attacked. The DFA refused to identify the victim.

Jose said that assistance is being extended to the family in bringing home the remains of the victim.

The Philippines does not have diplomatic presence in Mozambique. The Philippine Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa oversees it. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
