Angara urges gov’t to fund political parties
BALER, Aurora – Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara has called on the government to consider shouldering the expenses of political parties instead of relying on wealthy campaign donors.
Angara pointed out the danger of politicians becoming beholden to vested interest groups.
“Since I was a congressman, I have already been pushing for that. And my father, (former) senator (Edgardo) Angara is also advocating that proposal,” he said.
The younger Angara said it would be wise to tap state subsidy for political parties to level the playing field.
He said the move could be one of the solutions to the problem of campaign donations and contributions.
Only recently, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it intends to ask candidates in the May elections to issue a written acceptance of donations and contributions.
