Total ban on use of firecrackers by minors sought

Sheila Crisostomo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – An environmental group has called on the government to impose a total ban on the use of firecrackers among children during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“As firecrackers are dangerous for children, we find it logical and necessary for the authorities to prohibit minors from using all forms of firecrackers,” said Ecowaste Coalition coordinator Aileen Lucero.

Lucero said the proposed nationwide ban would not only reduce firecracker-related deaths and injuries, it will also lessen air pollution caused by firecrackers.

“We should welcome the New Year in a safe, toxic-free and climate-friendly way,” she said.

Ecowaste expressed concern over the proliferation of piccolo, a banned firecracker usually used by children.

Records from the Department of Health showed that piccolo has been the leading cause of injuries during New Year revelry in the past years.

“Piccolo is the leading cause of injuries every year yet it remains accessible to young children,” Lucero said.

The group urged local government units to penalize manufacturers and vendors of piccolo.

“For the sake of the children, those behind the sale and production of this firecracker should be held responsible. Piccolo is ‘public enemy number one’ that should be stopped,” it added.
