205 aspirants for national posts declared nuisance

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday declared 205 aspirants for national positions as nuisance candidates for the 2016 polls.

Comelec Chair Juan Andres “Andy” Bautista said the politician aspirants were declared nuisance based on the final voting of the First and Second Division of Comelec.

The moto proprio petitions filed by the Law Department against the Certificates of Candidacy (COC) of 100 presidential, nine vice presidential and 96 senatorial aspirants have been granted. Bautista however said that these individuals may still file their respective motions for reconsideration, challenging the ruling of the Divisions before the Commission en banc.

“They still have the chance to file a motion for reconsideration with the Comelec en banc,” Bautista said in a press briefing on Monday.

The Comelec data showed that among the 130 COCs submitted for president 125 were filed petitions to be declared nuisance candidates while 13 of the 19 vice presidential aspirants were included in the petition. For the senatorial post, 129 of 172 aspirants faced moto proprio petitions.

Comelec urged the members of the en banc to decide on the cases as the agency is expected to come up with the final list of official candidates for the 2016 polls by December 15.

“I am asking the other members of the Commission to immediately decide on the cases since the deadline to come up with the final list of candidates is near,” Bautista said.
