PLDT links APEC meetings with 8.5 Gbps connection

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The country’s top telecommunications and digital service provider Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) is boosting Internet connectivity at the venues of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings being held in Metro Manila.

In a statement yesterday, PLDT said it has put up facilities which can provide up to 8.5 Gbps (Gigabits per second) of Internet connectivity and voice solutions at major conference venues and host hotels for the 8,000 delegates expected to attend the APEC meetings.

The company has provided 3 Gbps of fiber connectivity and 100 units of carrier-grade access points to provide seamless delivery of Wi-Fi connectivity for all guests at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Complex where meetings will be held.

The World Trade Center, which serves as the press center for local and international media, has been connected with an I-Gate service for connection requirements.

Aside from the major venues, PLDT has boosted up to 100 Mbps (million of bits per second) speeds the Wi-Fi services in major hotels in Makati.

The hotels would serve as the home of most of the APEC delegates during the meetings.

Gbps is a measure of bandwidth on a digital data transmission medium such as optical fiber.

With slower technologies, bandwidth may be in the Mbps (millions of bits or megabits per second) or the Kbps (thousands of bits or kilobits per second) range.
