Poe’s DNA test results turn out negative

MANILA, Philippines - Presidential candidate Sen. Grace Poe yesterday admitted that the results of the initial DNA testing conducted on two subjects did not match her DNA.

In an interview over dzMM, Poe said the two tests were conducted as part of the evidence that she intends to submit to the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET), where a disqualification case has been filed against her over her questionable citizenship.

“I admit that what we got did not match our DNA. It is sad because we have been hoping for so long to know the truth about my biological family,” she said in Filipino.

“In spite of this, we still don’t lose heart because our legal argument does not only depend on the DNA test result. The basis is the right of children born in our country,” she added. 

Poe was a foundling left on the steps of the Jaro Cathedral in Iloilo. She was legally adopted by the late actor Fernando Poe Jr. and his wife, actress Susan Roces.

Because she was a foundling, her citizenship was questioned, particularly on whether or not she was a natural-born Filipino, a requirement for individuals running for Congress and the presidency.

Poe’s lawyer George Garcia remained firm that with or without her DNA test results, the senator still has a big chance of winning the case.

“With or without it, our case is strong and our bases are stronger. The DNA is more for personal consumption rather than for legal purpose,” he told The STAR.

Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian, Poe’s spokesman, said although the initial results were negative, there are more DNA tests still being processed.

“It is taking more time than we anticipated. Senator Poe is a natural-born Filipino because the laws substantiate that fact,“ he said.

“The laws are on all fours on this account, hence we are submitting the case for resolution. As stated earlier, the DNA results would only add to our legal arguments that are grounded on the intent of the framers of our Constitution and international principles of law. We are submitting it for resolution because we are very confident that our legal position will be sustained by the good tribunal,” he added.

Poe was given until today to submit the DNA results. SET spokesperson Irene Guevarra said the nine-member tribunal is expecting Poe’s camp to submit her DNA test results as the 15-day motion for extension they filed on Oct. 21 ends today.  

Poe’s search for her biological parents had been futile in spite of leads coming from Jaro where she was found.

After marrying Neil Llamanzares, Poe migrated to the United States where she took on US citizenship. She later acquired dual citizenship status. – With Robertzon Ramirez
