PNoy accepts Tolentino's resignation

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III has accepted Francis Tolentino's resignation as Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said Aquino formally accepted on October 8 Tolentino's resignation, which will be effective immediately.

Tolentino stepped down as MMDA chief on Wednesday to pursue his senatorial bid next year.

He also resigned following the sexy performance of the all-female dance group Playgirls that he allegedly brought to a Liberal Party (LP) event in Sta. Cruz, Laguna on September 30.

Tolentino apologized for the controversy and asked the LP leadership to remove him from its senatorial line-up for the 2016 polls.

In an earlier statement, Aquino vouched for Tolentino's "dedication and dynamic leadership" as a public servant, calling him a "firm advocate of Daang Matuwid."

"I believe that Chairman Tolentino is doing his part to ensure that public debate truly focuses on the continuation of Daang Matuwid and the undeniable benefits it has brought to our bosses," Aquino said.

"It is also my belief that he will take the opportunity to further reflect on how he can better affect positive change in the future," he added.

Aquino had said that his Cabinet members who will seek elective positions next year will be resigning including Justice Secretary Leila De Lima and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Director-General Joel Villanueva.

The two have reportedly submitted their resignation letters but Malacañang cannot confirm if Aquino have accepted them as of writing time.
