Workers to get holiday pay today

MANILA, Philippines - Workers reporting for work today will receive double pay.

The Department of Labor and Employment reminded employers to provide holiday pay for workers rendering services today.

For work done during a regular holiday, an employee shall be paid 200 percent of his regular daily salary, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said yesterday.

“For the first eight hours of work, an employee shall be entitled to 200 percent and additional 30 percent for overtime or work in excess of eight hours,” she said.

An employee whose rest day falls on a regular holiday and was required to work shall receive an additional 30 percent on top of the 200 percent for the first eight hours of work, Baldoz said.

An additional 30 percent of the hourly rate shall also be given those rendering overtime, she added.

Even those who will not report for work are entitled to receive their regular daily pay,  she said.

Private sector employers must observe proper pay rules for their workers today, Baldoz said.

“Proper observance of the pay rules on this day will lead to more productive and competent employees,” she said.

“Voluntary compliance with labor laws, including payment of correct wages on a holiday, is good for business.”

Malacañang has declared Aug. 31 a regular holiday to allow the people to observe National Heroes’ Day.
