PAGASA watches 2 tropical storms outside PAR

MANILA, Philippines – The weather bureau continues to monitor two tropical cyclones outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

The two cyclones which may possible enter the country have international names “Goni” and “Atsani.”

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather forecaster Jun Galang, Goni is expected to enter PAR by Wednesday, which will then be called by its local name “Ineng.”

Galang said tropical storm “Goni” was traced 2,500 kilometers east of Southern Luzon and moving west-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour on Sunday morning.

Goni, the ninth tropical cyclone expected to enter the country this year, is not expected to make landfall and will not directly affect the country. However, like typhoon “Hanna”, it will enhance the southwest monsoon that will result to rains over the Visayas and Southern Luzon region by Thursday or Friday.

 Galang added that although Goni is expected to intensify into a typhoon category, it is not likely to become a super typhoon. 

“Mararamdaman natin 'yung epekto, 'yun nga yung habagat. Habang tumataas ito at papalapit sa Japan, hahatak ito ng habagat, mararamdaman dito sa Luzon area,” Mendoza said in an interview with DZMM.

PAGASA weather forecaster Meno Mendoza said Goni has maximum sustain winds of 100 kilometer per hour and gustiness of 130 kph.

On the other hand, Mendoza said tropical storm Atsani was located 4,240 km east of Central Luzon.

Galang said Atsani has a slim chance of entering PAR.

Mendoza reported that Atsani remains its maximum sustain winds of 85 kph and gustiness of 10 kph.

The weather bureau said that as they monitor the movement of the two tropical storms, the Intertropical Convergence Zone will continue to bring cloudy skies with rainshowers across Visayas and Northern Mindanao while the rest of the country will experience fair weather with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.
