Leni Robredo for VP movement launched

Bebot Sison Jr., Cecille Suerte Felipe - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Despite the pronouncement of Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo that she has no plans to seek higher office, a movement meant to encourage her to run for vice president in the 2016 elections was launched yesterday.

The prime movers of the Leni Robredo for VP Movement said the lawmaker possesses all the qualities of a leader since she personally saw how her husband, the late interior secretary Jesse Robredo, worked to improve Naga City during his time as mayor.

The launching was held at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City and was attended by former and incumbent government officials.

Members of the Kaya Natin Movement, a multi-sectoral group that aims to espouse genuine change, ethical leadership, transparency and people empowerment, were also present.

Former Quezon representative Erin Tañada said they would also initiate a sign up day for the Leni Robredo for VP Movement on Aug. 31.

Asked by The STAR whether Robredo would be paired with Liberal Party standard bearer and Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Tañada said there was nothing definite yet.

“We are a group of people from different political parties who believe in Cong. Leni Robredo. We need a national leader like her,” he said. “If Sen. Grace Poe accepts the invitation to run as vice president of Secretary Roxas, this group will become the Leni Robredo for Senator Movement.”

Robredo has said she has no plans of running for a higher position since she believes her constituents in Camarines Sur still need her.

She maintained that she is still in the process of learning and that there are more senior and qualified politicians who should be considered to run for vice president.

Singer and songwriter Noel Cabangon, who was also present during the launch, said he believes Roxas and Robredo would make a perfect pair in the coming elections.

An LP member and lawyer, Robredo has consistently figured in possible senatorial lineups.

Meanwhile, Cabiao, Nueva Ecija Mayor Baby Congco said she wants Robredo to run for a national position because the public has seen how strong she has handled various challenges, including the death of her husband in a plane crash three years ago.

LA Ruanto of Kaya Natin Movement said like her husband, the congresswoman is a simple, genuine and dedicated public servant who patiently explains the government’s programs, even if there are only 10 people in attendance.
