Philippines, Indonesia execs to discuss Veloso case
MANILA, Philippines - Officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and Department of Justice (DOJ) will meet today with Indonesian officials to discuss the case of death convict Mary Jane Veloso.
They will discuss developments in the cases filed in the Philippines against the recruiters of Veloso.
They will also tackle the assistance available for Veloso under the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Among Like-Minded ASEAN Member Countries.
“This is part of the DFA’s commitment to provide assistance to Veloso,” the DFA said.
Last April, Veloso was granted a reprieve by the Indonesian government and spared from execution.
The 30-year-old single mother claimed she was asked by a friend to bring luggage to Indonesia but she was not aware the suitcase contained illegal drugs.
Veloso was arrested at the Yogyakarta airport on April 25, 2010 for possession of 2.6 kilograms of heroin.
