Public urged to conserve water

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System-Regulatory Office yesterday urged the public to conserve water as the country braces for the El Niño phenomenon.

Chief regulator Joel Yu said conserving water would enhance water supply reliability as a dry spell may cause water shortage.

Yu called on the public to use water wisely and responsibly, citing the state weather bureau’s announcement that the country is now experiencing a mild case of El Niño.

“Whether or not there is El Niño, water should be treated as a valuable resource,” he said.

Yu added the public should not wait for the water in Angat Dam, La Mesa Dam and other vital water sources to reach critical level.

“Intelligent and responsible use of water comes naturally when everyone is aware of its importance. It is imperative that we help each other and start conserving water to ensure continued water supply. Let us demonstrate our resolve to save water by cutting back on non-essential uses and getting rid of wasteful practices,” Yu said.

Among the measures that should be taken is to make sure that taps or faucets are tightly closed.

Regularly check pipes for leaks and have them repaired immediately; recycle water by using this to flush the toilet.

When bathing, use a pail and dipper instead of the shower.

Turn off the tap while washing, shaving or brushing teeth. Use a glass of water for gargling.

Do not thaw frozen food under a running tap but instead bring it out early enough to thaw at room temperature.

Water plants, garden or lawn during cooler parts of the day; and when washing the car, use a pail and cotton rag instead of a hose and sponge.
