MANILA, Philippines - The Aquino government will have a simple commemoration of the 29th anniversary of the EDSA People Power next week.
EDSA People Power Commissioner Emily Abrera said the government decided to have a "little quieter" celebration this year so it could intensify the activities for the 30th EDSA anniversary in 2016, which is also President Aquino's last year in office.
"Napakasimple po ng celebration this year because it’s the 29th and we purposely kept it simple kasi po next year will be a — siguro parang a round number 30 — 30th anniversary celebration so we can go all out for the 30th," Abrera said in a press briefing in Malacañang on Tuesday.
The activities will start on February 24 with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City to commemorate all past heroes, including the military personnel who were at the 1986 EDSA People Revolution.
"We will lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldiers sa Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig in the morning. This is also, of course, to recognize the revolt as a struggle for freedom, much like the one started by our veterans who fought for our country during World War II," Abrera said.
She said former President Fidel Ramos will be invited to lead the activities.
On February 25, there will also be a wreath-laying ceremony at the People Power Monument followed by a holy mass at the EDSA Shrine.
Abrera said the mass will be celebrated by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle.
President Aquino and the first family will be invited as guests of honor for the activities. Groups and individuals who peacefully fought for freedom and democracy will also be in attendance, according to Abrera.
